Die Heretic! Those things that divide us...
I subscribe to several blogs, one of which is Nathan Bingham's. He has a great post you can read here which includes the following story:
A man was walking along San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge when he saw a woman about to jump off. He ran up to her, trying to dissuade her from committing suicide. He told her simply that God loved her. A tear came to her eye.
He then asked her, “Are you a Christian, a Jew, a Hindu, or what?”
“I’m a Christian,” she replied.
He said, “Me, too! Small world! Protestant or Catholic?”
“Protestant.”
“Me, too! What denomination?”
“Baptist.”
“Me, too! Northern Baptist or Southern Baptist?”
“Northern Baptist.”
He remarked, “Well, ME TOO! Northern Conservative Baptist or Northern Liberal Baptist?”
She answered, “Northern Conservative Baptist.”
He said, “Well, that’s amazing! Northern Conservative Fundamentalist Baptist or Northern Conservative Reformed Baptist?”
“Northern Conservative Fundamentalist Baptist.”
“Remarkable! Northern Conservative Fundamentalist Baptist Great Lakes Region or Northern Conservative Fundamentalist Baptist Eastern Region?”
She told him, “Northern Conservative Fundamentalist Baptist Great Lakes Region.”
“A miracle!” he cried. “Northern Conservative Fundamentalist Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1879, or Northern Conservative Fundamentalist Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1912?”
She said, “Northern Conservative Fundamentalist Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1912.”
He then said, “Die, heretic!”, and pushed her over the rail.
I have to admit, I laughed uncontrollably when I read this. I think there are many times in our lives we feel like the woman on the bridge, pushed over the edge because of some small insignificant preference. But then I began thinking, how many times have I been the one yelling, "Die, heretic!" and doing the pushing? May we not allow the small stuff to keep us from the bigger stuff. By choosing our preferences over the essentials we watch a lost and dying world fall over the bridge to an eternal death.
Just think about that... pray... repent...

Jesus commanded us to have unity, one with another. He also said that, if we don't come to Him as a little child, we won't even get to see the Kingdom of Heaven.
So ... I'm guessing our unity one with another had best be something a little child can understand. And that's pretty much sin, repentance and trusting Jesus. If our unity centers on anything else, it's Idolatry, IMO.
